Two more Iraq athletes heading to Beijing
After the IOC lifted its from Iraq from competing at the Beijing Olympics, two more athletes are now allowed to compete: rowers Haidar Nozad and Hamzah Hussein Jebur in the men’s doubles sculls.
They were given permission as their places were yet to be filled by other athletes. Iraq has pledged to hold free elections for its national committee. Unfortunately, the decision cam too late for Iraqi athletes in judo, archery, and weightlifting who will miss the Olympics.
Shout out to the Kiwi Swimmers via their web form
The swimmers from New Zealand are accepting messages via a form on the web site of New Zealand Swimming. http://tinyurl.com/6dpyhs
I sent a message to the team to swim fast.
The New Zealand swimmers are well coached, but the team isn’t able to pull from a population base as large as Australia. The most famous sports team from New Zealand, its rugby squad, is called the ‘All Blacks.’ So basketball team is the “Tall Blacks” and the swimmers are fondly called the “Wet Blacks.”
The color black isn’t in the nation’s flag. And, the flag is much like that of others.
We visited New Zealand and stayed in Christchurch — a town much like BJ in that there are plenty of excellent opportunities for transportation by bicycle. Other parts of New Zealand are not as suited for bikes. The number of people are not similar, of course.

Five athletes who had their gender questioned - can you tell?
The story that Beijing will have gender testing at the Olympics received media attention around the world, with many people asking if it is really necessary. The Guardian looked into five athletes who had their gender questions at a sporting competition.
The article does note: “Transsexuals, who have had a sex change from male to female, can compete in women’s events in the Olympics, as long they wait two years after the operation.”

Argentina joins Australia with 2-0 Diamond record
Argentina took a 75-60 win over Serbia to top group B in the 2008 FIBA Diamond Ball for Men on July 31 in Nanjing, China's Jiangsu province.
2004 Olympic champion Argentina came out with all their big-name starters, including NBA stars Manu Ginobili, Luis Scola and Fabricio Oberto. Yet their best man in the first quarter was center Román González, who plays for Mar del Plata's Penarol club. He scored nine points in the quarter, including a three-point play. Vujanic Milos led Serbia's counter attack, scoring five points while dishing out two assists. Argentina led at the quarter's close, 21-18.
Serbia bounced back in the second quarter with a 16-7 run, extending their lead to 34-28 after a three pointer from Novica Velickovic. However, they couldn't stop Argentina's forward Andrés Nocioni from reviving his team. Thanks to five points from him and a field goal from guard Carlos Delfino, Argentina reclaimed their lead with 35-34 going to the half.
Nocioni continued his strong performance in the third quarter. He and point guard Pablo Prigioni led another Argentinean offensive, with Nocioni netting seven points and Prigioni contributing five. Their team scored 20 points in this quarter, while only giving up nine to Serbia, to put the game safely in Argentina's control at 54-42 at the end of the third quarter.
Serbia reduced the deficit to seven points in the middle of the fourth, but their efforts were overwhelmed by a 14-4 run from Argentina's NBA force. Center Oberto and guard Ginobili, both from the San Antonio Spurs, contributed six points and eight points respectively, ending up with a final score 75-60 in Argentina's favor.
Ginobili was the top scorer that night, netting 18 points. Nocioni scored 15 points while grabbing eight rebounds. Branko Cvetkovic was Serbia's top scorer, getting 13 points in 20 minutes. Argentina beat Serbia in a big way on free throw shooting, sinking 19 out of 25 while Serbia only managed to hit 10 of their 23 attempts at the line.
Argentina will face Australia, the group A leader, in the Diamond Ball final on August 1. On the same day China will play Iran, while Serbia will compete against Angola.
Bruton beats buzzer, Australia beats Angola
After Angola's third quarter comeback had them poised for a win late into the fourth quarter, Australia was saved by C.J. Bruton's last-second three-pointer to beat Angola 81-78 in day three of the FIBA Diamond Ball for Men in Nanjing, China.
Andrew Bogut was the high scorer of the game with 32 points, an honor he already held at the end of the first half, where he contributed 14 points in addition to nine rebounds. Australia outscored Angola overall in the first two quarters, going to the break 42-35, and crashed the boards harder with 13 defensive rebounds and seven on offense.
Until the third quarter rolled around, it seemed like Australia was coming off their previous night's win over China and Yao Ming with great confidence. Angola rattled Australia by taking the lead four minutes into the third, after a series of fouls committed by Australia brought high-scoring forwards Joaquim Gomes, Eduardo Mingas and Olimpio Cipriano to the free throw line. Angola was able to keep their opponents in check while adding to their score, and closed out the quarter tied 59-59.
Bogut brought Australia back their lead midway through the fourth quarter, hitting a jumper for 68-67. Two minutes later Cipriano sunk a three to tie, and his team held the advantage until 44 seconds left on the clock, when Bogut hit his foul shot after a made basket for a three-point play, bringing the score even again at 78-78.
With the pressure on high, Cipriano missed a three point field goal attempt and the Boomers were lucky that forward Matthew Nielson got the defensive rebound with only 17 seconds left. Australia took their time with the possession, and point guard Bruton dribbled in place from behind the arc until the clock was almost out before he launched the game winning shot.
Now Australia sits at the top of group A with two wins and no losses, while Angola is left at the bottom with the reverse record, 0-2. Australia will face group B leader Argentina, who also has a 2-0 record in group play, in the finals of the Diamond Ball on August 1 at 7:30 p.m. (UTC/GMT +8).

Senator Sam Brownback says China is planning to spy on hotel guests
Senator Sam Brownback has said that China is planning on spying on hotel guests internet usage during the Beijing Olympic games.
“The Chinese government has put in place a system to spy on and gather information about every guest at hotels where Olympic visitors are staying,” Kansas Senator Sam Brownback told reporters.
“This means journalists, athletes’ families, human rights advocates and other visitors will be subjected to invasive intelligence gathering by the Chinese Public Security Bureau.”
I believe most western countries monitor internet usage at some level. The only difference is the terminology. When the U.S. talks about China they use the word “spying”, when they talk about doing the same thing in their own countries they call it “monitoring” or “surveillance”, all legal under the Patriot Act.
Australia beat China in Diamond Cup
AUSTRALIA have beaten the Tao Ming-led China 67-55 in a fiery opening to the Boomers' campaign in the pre-Olympic Diamond Cup in Nanjing.
In a heated match marred by the occasional scuffle and some bruising screens, the Boomers prevailed by 12 points in a preview of what they can expect in Beijing next month.
Yao shaded Australia's Andrew Bogut in the battle of NBA big men, but the visitors showed enough composure down the stretch to get off to the best possible start in the six-nation tournament and disappoint a vocal home crowd.
Yao finished with 14 points and seven boards, while Bogut had nine points and eight rebounds.
Chris Anstey played an important role for the Boomers, finishing with a team-high 11 points, while European-based forward Dave Andersen also impressed in his 10-point haul.
Australia got off to a confident start, skipping out to a 7-2 lead in the opening minutes, with Bogut and CJ Bruton busy early on.
But the home side soon steadied, locking the scores up at 7-7 before gaining their first lead midway through the first term.
Boomers veteran Anstey then weighed into proceedings, hitting back-to-back triples to give Australia back the lead.
Anstey then set a huge screen on China's starting point guard Liu Wei that sent him crashing to the floor.
Guard play is the weak link in the Chinese national team and the fact Liu didn't return heaped more pressure on their back court.
At quarter-time Australia led 20-16 and their advantage was quickly stretched to double figures early in the second period.
The Boomers' defensive pressure restricted China to just 12 points for the quarter and they added 18 to take a 38-28 edge into the main break. Their lead would have been more if not for four consecutive free-throw misses from Bogut.
Australia appeared headed for victory but a late run in the final quarter, which included a questionable unsportsmanlike call on Boomers skipper Matt Nielsen, helped China claw to within six points, 55-49.
But the Australians regained control in a positive sign ahead of the Beijing Games.

Nike to allow swimmers to wear LZR racer swimsuits
Nike is set to allow its swimmers to wear the the new high-tech Speedo swimsuits instead of its own.
Several world records have been broken by swimmers wearing the new suits.
“It is about putting their performance and their focus first,” Nike spokesman Dean Stoyer said. “This is what they have trained for. It is the biggest moment of their lives.”
The German teams have had problems with the Adidas and Japan with Mizuno.
Lionel Messi going to Beijing
Great news for Argentina! FIFA passed a resolution which ordered Barcelona to allow Lionel Messi to play in the Olympics.
“Luckily the issue was solved to our favor after so many coming and going,” said coach Sergio Batista.
Messi is traveling to Italy on Thursday and then on to Beijing. Argentina will play Cote d’Ivoire on Aug. 7, a day before the opening ceremony of the Olympic games.
Security checks to be conducted at Tian'anmen Square
At the press conference held at the Beijing International Media Center on the morning of July 30, relevant department officials revealed the plan for the parterre arrangement and environmental cultural activities at Tian'anmen Square during the 2008 Olympic Games.
The parterre arrangement at Tian'anmen Square will have an Olympic theme. Meanwhile, the combination of Olympic symbols, buildings, and Olympic emblem-modeled parterre will reflect the Olympic spirit.
Meanwhile, cultural activities of various forms such as song, dance, calisthenics will be held at Tian'anmen Square.
A display of fireworks at the Square will celebrate the Opening Ceremony of the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games on August 8.
In addition, it was revealed that starting July 30, visitors to Tian'anmen Square will need go through a security check. Suitable measures will be adopted to limit the flow of visitors at the Square during the Games.
Malaysia’s Lee Chong Wei hoping to be China’s Li Dan
Li Dan is China’s star Badminton player and is often described as the John McEnroe of badminton for his arguing with referees. Lee Chong is Malaysia’s best hope for a medal at the Beijing Olympics and hopes to beat Li Dan.
“The national players have prepared very well and they have the chance to win medals in Beijing this time,” Nadzmi Salleh told the New Straits Times.
“Chong Wei leads the charge and I feel that he has a chance against Lin Dan if they meet in the final,” he said, alluding to Lee’s recent Thomas Cup victory and his good preparation for the Olympics.
Xinhua: Internet speedy and stable - just expensive
There have been several reports of problems with the internet at the media press center for the Beijing Olympics, but Xinhua reports that the service is “sufficient and convenient”.
“I am satisfied with the Internet service here. The price is reasonable and I can be on-line at any time. It’s convenient,” said Cristian Mihai Preda, a photographer working for a Romania sports media.
“My articles can be sent back to editing office very smoothly, and I can go every website I must go, to find the information I need in my reporting from the Internet,” said Ju-Nie Shen Muller, sports editor of the World Journal, the largest Chinese language newspaper in North America.
The cost seems expensive however:
Renting a Broadband IC card or a WLAN from July 25 to August 25 costs 3,500 yuan (500 US dollars), while renting a WLAN plus info 2008 costs 8,450 yuan
Also from Slashdot:
“Working for the Olympics as an IT contractor, I recently moved to the Media Village (where all of the reporters live) and was surprised the there was no free internet. BOCOG (Beijing Organizing Committee of the 2008 Olympic Games) is charging a ridiculous amount of money for ADSL service: for 512/512 it costs 7712.5 RMB (1131.20 USD); for 1M/512 it costs 9156.25 (1342.95 USD); for 2M/512 it costs a whopping 11,700 RMB (1716.05 USD). That is for only one month! For extra features like a fixed IP? That costs an additional 450 RMB (66 USD). I just can’t believe that not only do I have to deal with the Great Firewall of China, but also pay through the nose to use it!”
I suppose China has to get back some of the money for hosting the Olympics. To get internet connected in a private apartment the connection fee is about 300RMB and monthly charge of around 150RMB.
Further update on the internet issue:
Quoting from an interview South China Morning Post did with Kevan Gosper:
“If you have been misled by what I have told you [over the months and years] about there being free internet access during the Games, then I apologise,” Mr Gosper told the South China Morning Post on Wednesday morning in an exclusive interview.
“I’m not backing off what I said. There will be full, open and free internet access during Games time to allow journalists to report on the Olympics.
“But [recently] I have also been advised that some of the IOC officials had negotiated with the Chinese that some sensitive sites would be blocked.
“I would like it all to be open. I am not here to defend the Chinese decisions. I am here to ensure journalists can report on the Games. I am disappointed the access is not wider. But I can’t tell the Chinese what to do.”
Sports rich list comes to Beijing
Some of the richest sporting celebrities will be coming to China to compete in the Beijing Olympics. Many Olympic sports retain an amateur flavor and in some sports like boxing, professionals cannot compete. For basketball and tennis however, players earn millions of dollars in competition earnings, endorsements, appearances, sponsorship and advertising.
Here is a look at some of the top Olympic earners and their 2007 income as provided by Forbes.
Yao Ming - $56.6 million
Kobe Bryant - basketball - $33 million
Roger Federer - tennis - $29 million
LeBron James - basketball - $27 million
Liu Xiang athletics - $23.8 million
Maria Sharapova - tennis - $23 million
Lionel Messi - Football/soccer - $11.9
Rats are eating the ping pong balls and other Olympic problems
Bloomberg has a funny article on the preparations going on for the Beijing Olympics.
I can imagine preparing for an Olympic games is like preparing for a wedding, but on a grander scale - whatever can go wrong, will go wrong, all while the whole world is watching.
The article gives some examples such as the rats that are eating the ping-pong balls in the store-room and the podiums which athletes will receive their medals on, keep collapsing. You can just imagine three athletes all standing on the podium with their medals, listening to their country’s national anthem, only to have it collapse to pieces.
Six Games-time Olympic licensed product categories released
Six categories of new Games-time official licensed products were unveiled on the occasion of the 10-day countdown to the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games. All items are priced at 500 yuan or below. The new items include precious metal products, clothing, pins and silk products, among others.
According to Yuan Bin, director of BOCOG's Marketing Department, 68 authorized manufacturers had produced more than 8,000 products across twelve categories as of the end of June 2008. The products have been available across the nation as well as in Hong Kong and Macau at more than 6,300 outlets.
Internet sites still being blocked at press center
One of the promises China made in hosting the Olympic games was media freedom and open internet. Reporters are still having problems accessing some sites according to this article.
Kevan Gosper representing the IOC clarified the definition of ‘open internet for the Olympics’ by saying:
“My preoccupation and responsibility is to ensure that the games competitions are reported openly to the world,” Gosper said.
“The regulatory changes we negotiated with BOCOG and which required Chinese legislative changes were to do with reporting on the games,” Gosper added, using the acronym for the Olympic organizers. “This didn’t necessarily extend to free access and reporting on everything that relates to China.”
The end of the article had a quote from a Cuban reporter:
“I’m surprised how tightly controlled and complicated everything is here,” he said. “To get a phone number from China Mobile, I have to give them a copy of my passport and my mother’s maiden name. This seems quite excessive and abnormal.”
This seems a bit strange to me, because usually you can go to any convenience store or mobile phone shop and buy a Chinese SIM card without showing any kind of ID.
Gold medal in the bag for U.S. softball team
The United States softball team has won every gold medal at the Olympics since the sport was introduced in 1996. Jennie Finch and Cat Osterman will head up the pitching and Crystal Bustos who scored five home runs in Athens will be competing in Beijing.
The team won the ISF Women’s World Championships in September 2006 in Beijing and the 2007 World Cup of Softball. As in any sport upsets do happen. Australia and Japan have good teams which could knock the U.S. team off of its perch.

Torch fires up Olympic co-host city
Wang Santang, secratary of the Qinhuangdao CPC Committee, lit the cauldron at Olympic Avenue Park at 10:37 a.m., bringing the Qinhuangdao leg of the Olympic Torch Relay to an end.
Xi Enting, two-time Table Tennis world champion and the first torchbearer in this leg of the relay, started the event at 8:12 a.m. The seven kilometer route were run by 256 torchbearers.
Xi was born on March 3, 1946. He was a member of the national team from 1965 to 1975, during which he won the Table Tennis World Championships twice.. From 1976 to 1991, he was coach of the Chinese national team and of several Olympic and world champions, such as Chen Longcan and Wei Qingguang.
The city of Tangshang will host the Olympic torch on Thursday.
China beats Angola - Yao Ming back in form
Although Angola led by as many as eight points in the first half, China was led by NBA star Yao Ming and guard Liu Wei to an 83-74 victory in the opening night of the FIBA Diamond Ball for Men, on July 29 in Nanjing, China's Jiangsu province.
Angola's forward Olimpio Cipriano led the night's scoring at 24 points, but Yao came in just behind with 21 points on an 80% shooting accuracy. Although the Houston Rockets center was called for an unsportsmanlike foul while fighting for position against Eduardo Mingas, he was a big reason why China took this game, playing 29 minutes and allowing his team to rely heavily on his inside scoring.
Forward Joaquim Gomes tied Yao for 21 points on the Angola side, but beat him on rebounds, crashing the boards for eight as opposed to Yao's five.
China guard Liu led the game with six assists, and scored nine points in the first half along with his teammate Wang Shipeng to give China the lead 40-37 at the break. Although there were times late in the second half where China still only enjoyed a narrow three point lead, they clinched their win with solid defense and four players dropping their shots for double digit scoring: Yao, guards Liu for 18 and Wang for 13, and NBA forward Yi Jianlian with 11 points and six rebounds.
Angola and China last met in day three of the round-robin FIBA Stankovic Cup series in Hangzhou, where Angola squeaked by for a 72-71 win. Both teams will compete in group B in the Olympic Men's Basketball tournament this August.
“Yao lets us really put the pressure on the opposition,” China guard Liu Wei said after the opening day of the FIBA Diamond Ball tournament in Nanjing.
Amy Acuff hoping for a medal
Amy Acuff is the six times U.S. national women’s high jump champion. She recently finished third at the London Grand Prix behind Anna Chicherova from Russia and Nicole Forrester from Canada.
Off the field she has a successful modeling career and has appeared in Esquire’s portfolio of America’s 10 Sexiest Athletes, a 2004 Playboy cover and spreads in Maxim and FHM. She is also a Licensed Acupuncturist and interested in Chinese medicine.
Seal penis and China’s exotic food
Thousands of journalist will be coming to Beijing to cover the Olympics. Probably many of them for the first time. Some will probably even get out of the MPC to write about non-Olympic related stories.
My fairly unoriginal prediction for the number 1 non-Olympic related story will be China’s exotic food. Two hot spots are the Donghuamen Night Market (scorpions on a stick) and Guolizhuang a.k.a the “penis restaurant”.
The Donghuamen Night Market is a fun place to visit for tourists, but gets far too many “look what they eat in China” type stories from western media. Beijing nightlife blogger, Beijing Boyce is even keeping a tally on the “scorpion on a stick stories”.
Here is another one for the collection: How about a dish of seal penis?
Men's Basketball teams warm up for Beijing 2008
Participating teams in the Olympic Men's Basketball Tournament are keeping busy with friendly matches and warm-up tournaments to prepare for Beijing competition.
On July 29 the FIBA (International Basketball Federation) Diamond Ball Tournament for Men begins in Nanjing, China, with six nations competing into two groups: Angola, Australia and China in group A; and Argentina, Iran and Serbia in group B.
With 2004 Olympic champion Argentina, as well as Angola, Australia and Iran, each the champion of their respective continents, the Diamond Ball pits high level competitors against each other the week before the start of the Beijing Games.
Only Serbia among the Diamond Ball participants will not play in the Olympics this year, although they are coming from winning the Mechel Cup in Moscow, where they beat Latvia, Ukraine and even managed to squeeze past 2007 EuroBasket champion Russia, 75-74.
Olympic competitors skipping the Diamond Ball are still playing in other warm-up matches. 2006 FIBA World Champion Spain recently beat Argentina on home territory twice, once in a friendly match in Madrid, and again in the last game of the Torneo de Ourense, where Spain took the 2004 gold medal team 87-62.
The United States, meanwhile, is playing hard in practice games and trying not to take their "Dream Team" reputation for granted. They are especially keen to turn their NBA star-studded roster into a cohesive unit by Games time in order to reclaim their lost position at the top of the podium, prompting a new nickname, the "Redeem Team."
After sitting out the United States' first warm-up game on July 25 against Canada, Cleveland Cavaliers' LeBron James joined the team's first practice in Macao with his recently sprained right ankle taped up on Monday, July 28.
In Macao, the United States will play Turkey on July 31 and Olympic men's group A team Lithuania on August 1. Then the US team goes to Shanghai, where they will play two more group A teams, Russia on August 3 and Australia on August 5. James plans to play in the upcoming Macao and Shanghai games.
The United States will play in group B at the Olympics, along with China, Angola, Spain, Germany and Greece.
Group A will include Lithuania, Russia and Australia, as well as Argentina, Iran and, Croatia
Below is the schedule for the Diamond Ball Tournament in Nanjing beginning on July 29. This is not the first FIBA tournament hosted in Nanjing; the FIBA World Championship for Women was held in the Jiangsu province capital in 2002.

Grant Hackett taking each day one step at a time
Grant Hackett is set to make history by winning his third gold medal in consecutive Olympics in the 1500 meters freestyle.
“I’m not thinking about the historic side … If it happens, it happens. If it doesn’t, it doesn’t,” Hackett said on the third day of a weeklong training camp with his team at Kuala Lumpur. “Life sort of goes on.”
Hackett is in Kuala Lumpur now to acclimatize to the heat and humidity of Beijing.
“Physically and mentally, I feel very prepared … It looks pretty good but at the same time I mean it’s one of those things where is comes down to how you are feeling on the day as well,” Hackett said.
Hackett will also compete in the 400 meter freestyle in Beijing
Jeremy Wariner first white man in 24 years to win a sprint medal
At the 2004 Olympic games, Jeremy Wariner became the first white man in 24 years to win an Olympic sprint medal.
He is going into the Beijing Olympics as favorite in the mens 400 meters. At the final of the U.S. Olympic trials Wariner finished second to LaShawn Merritt. Some people are questioning his decision to change coaches.
Total eclipse a week before the Beijing Olympics
I am not sure if it is a good or bad omen, but there will be a total eclipse of the sun a week before the Beijing Olympics. In ancient times people saw it as a bad omen, but fortunately today most people see it just as a good chance to take some spectacular photographs.
Mak Ling-ling, one of the most renowned feng shui and astrology experts in Hong Kong and author of many books, said the eclipse might bring small-scale political turbulence and problems to the transport and communication networks in Beijing during the Games.
“Protests and chaos on the street are very likely but they will not do any permanent harm to the Chinese authorities,” she told AFP.
You won’t be able to see the eclipse in Beijing however; its path with go from Canada, the Arctic, Russia, Mongolia and on to western China and finish in the city of Xi’an.
China may play down any association between the eclipse and the Olympics to avoid being mocked for being superstitious — but Mak said it had a long-time practice of consulting feng shui experts when selecting athletes.
“The national teams give me the date and time of birth of the athletes and ask me to calculate and identify the ones with a strong will and a real chance of winning international games,” she said.
“No Olympics teams have consulted me about the eclipse but I believe if the authorities are really worried about it, they would seek help and do something discreetly without letting outsiders know.”
A total solar eclipse is caused when the moon blots out the sun by passing directly between it and the earth, and has traditionally been associated with misfortune.
The latest eclipse is set to traverse half the earth over the course of two hours in August 1.
The path of the moon’s umbral shadow, some 10,200 kilometres (6,375 miles) long, will begin in Canada and extend across northern Greenland, the Arctic, central Russia and Mongolia, before ending in northern China. But it will not cross Beijing.
It will make its final stop at sunset in Xi’an, capital of China’s Shaanxi province and site of the famed terracotta army.
“In ancient times, Chinese people believed that a celestial dragon or dog was devouring the sun during an eclipse,” said Peter So, another top feng shui master in Hong Kong.
“The belief gave rise to their practice of banging drums and pots — their idea of using loud noises to frighten away the animal,” added So, who hosts TV shows and has a client list numbering many of the city’s rich and famous.
Solar eclipses were regarded as heavenly signs that foretold the future of emperors. Legends have it that two Chinese astrologers were beheaded in 2300 BC for failing to predict one.
In ancient times, western astrologers also believed eclipses had the power to start and stop wars, solve scientific puzzles, and trigger earthquakes and floods.
Nowadays, the natural phenomenon is often associated with a volatile stock market, said So. “It is not surprising. Some people become reluctant to invest in the market after learning about all the theories on solar eclipses.”
He predicted big market swings during the Olympics but said China’s bourses would recover and remain strong until August 2009.
Raymond Lo, another prominent fortune teller and astrologer in Hong Kong, said the start date for the Olympics — August 8, 2008 — on the Chinese lunar calendar had a tendency to trigger water disasters, which could be reinforced by the eclipse.
“It is the year of the Rat, the month of the Monkey, and the day of the Dragon. We had the same combination of animals on the day when the tsunami struck in 2004,” he added.
The Chinese zodiac is based on a 12-year cycle, with each year represented by an animal. Fortune tellers base predictions on the relationship between the zodiac animals and the characteristics of each.
But a sceptical Cheng Kai-ming, a physics lecturer at Chinese University of Hong Kong, said any disasters were mere coincidence.
“There are so many natural or man-made disasters every year,” he told AFP
Bill Gates to spend $130,000 on anti-smoking campaign in China
China Daily reports that the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation will spend $130,000 on an anti-smoking campaign during the Beiing Olympics.
“Awareness of the disease burden that smoking causes is not very widespread. I’d say most people in the US know it, but in China, that’s not the case,” Gates, who co-chairs the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, said at a press conference in New York City on Wednesday.
The government has already banned smoking from Olympic related venues and pledged to have a “smoke-free” Olympics.
I admire Bill Gates for his philanthropic work, but I can’t really see the advertisements will have any effect. I am sure there are probably hundreds of causes in China that would far benefit from the money.
Bill Gates will be attending the opening ceremony of the Olympic games on August the 8th with his family.

USA assures spot in gold medal match
Team USA beat the host of the final round of the World League tournament by 3-0 (25-23, 25-22 and 27-25) in Rio de Janeiro, thus winning a spot in the gold match to be played on Sunday.
The beginning of the first set was a tug-of-war between the two sides. Brazil came up with good blocks, but the USA was better overall in defense. Although the host team led the first TTO, the Americans took control of the match with good serves and efficient spikes, eventually claiming a narrow win at 25-23.
In the second set, despite an early lead by the Brazilians, the USA reached a 7-5 lead, helped by the strong spikes of Clayton Stanley. The score was then increased to 16-13 at the second TTO. Brazilian head coach Bernardo Rezende substituted several players to try to reverse the situation, but it all ended in vain as the Americans took the set 25-22.
The final set proved to be a fierce battle for both sides. Brazil led the first TTO with better defense. Their efficient blocks stopped Stanley's powerful spikes. The Americans responded with good backcourt attack and reversed the score 15-14, later increasing their advantage to 18-14. Although Brazil made great efforts to improve their situation, they were not able to avoid the defeat, 25-27.
"The Americans showed an outstanding defense and good consistency on serving. That was the difference. Some of our players were not at the level they are able to," Rezende told FIVB.

China Badminton Team announced
China's badminton chief, Coach Li Yongbo, has announced that 19 players will represent China at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games.
China will have the maximum number of players in both the men's and women's singles competitions. Only three players can represent each National Olympic Committee (NOC) in each category.
Deciding the women's singles roster was the biggest challenge given that China has four of the top ranked players in the world. No. 1 and No. 2 players, Xie Xingfang and Lu Lan were obvious choices; defending champion Zhang Ning was ultimately selected over 2007 World Champion Zhu Lin.
Missing the team placement was a hard call for 33-year-old Zhu, currently ranked No. 3 in the world. Zhang is only ranked at No. 7 due to her absence from key tournaments this year due to injury.
In Mixed Doubles, with only two teams representing each country, the younger duo of He Hanbin and Yu Yang were selected ahead of Xie Zhongbo and Zhang Yawen. World No2 duo Zheng Bo and Gao Ling, earned the other place.
Yu Yang will compete in the Women's Doubles with partner Du Jing and again in Mixed Doubles with He Hanbin.
While Xie Zhongbo and Zhang Yawen lost the Mixed Doubles place, they will still compete. Xie will play with Guo Zhendong in Men's Doubles and Zhang Yawen with partner Wei Yili in Women's Doubles.
China's top three players, Lin Dan, Bao Chunlai and Chen Jin, will all participate in the Men's Singles tournament.

No 'Hercules' at Beijing 2008
Iran's double gold medalist and 105+ kilogram world record holding weightlifter Hossein Rezazadeh, also known as the "Iranian Hercules," will not be coming to Beijing to defend his title.
Rezazadeh, who weighs more than 161kg at 185cm tall, made the decision not to compete in this year's Olympics after doctors told him to avoid "heavy and stressful activity."
"I am sure that my young friends are very well able to repeat the national honor in the 2008 Olympic Games and therefore I accept the doctors' suggestion," said the 30-year old Olympic champion.
"Mr. Rezazadeh had eight months of heavy training while having stomach problems," said Iranian weightlifting federation public relations, Mahmoud Abdollahi.
Head of the Iran Weightlifting Federation Bahram Afsharzadeh wrote a letter to Rezazadeh saying he should "pay attention to the suggestion of the doctors and the experts."
The "Iranian Hercules" is currently the world record holder for Snatch (213kg), Clean and Jerk (263 kg) and total (472kg) in the 105+ weight class. His lifting world records surpass the records in all other weight classes, prompting many to call him "the world's strongest man."
When he won his first Olympic gold at the 2000 Sydney Games, Rezazadeh was also breaking a decades-long tradition of Soviet dominance in the sport.
Rezazadeh was also the Asian Games champion in 2002 and 2006, and won multiple golds at each of the World Championships from 2002-2006. He did not participate in the 2007 World Championships because of a knee injury sustained in a car accident driving to weightlifting camp in northern Iran last year. Latvia's Viktors Scerbatihs won the 105+kg division instead.
As one of Iran's biggest celebrities, this world-class lifter was honored with the national distinction of "Champion of Champions" in 2002 and granted a badge of courage from Iranian President Mohammad Khatami. In 2006, a 6,000-person capacity indoor arena named "Rezazadeh Stadium" was built in his honor in his hometown of Ardabil, Iran.

Serbia qualified for the final round by finishing second in pool A behind Brazil, which was guaranteed a spot in the final round as the host. The team overcame a weak start in the first set to tie the United States at 19 and then pushed ahead to take the set 25-23. A combination of serves and blocks kept Serbia in control of the match and helped them to a straight-set win.
"I am pretty satisfied with our game, especially in block and defense," said Serbia's captain Nikola Grbic. "I really hope we can keep this rhythm until Beijing."
Japan will play Russia on Thursday, while the United States will face Poland. The final round concludes on Sunday.

Fireworks to highlight Olympic Games Opening Ceremony
Fireworks will be set off during the opening ceremony of the Olympic Games on August 8 to create a joyous and festive atmosphere, an official said on Wednesday.
Wang Ning, deputy director of the Opening & Closing Ceremonies Department of BOCOG, said fireworks of different shapes will be displayed above the main stadium of the Games, Olympic Forest Park and the Juyongguan section of the Great Wall.
"For the first time, the shape of the Olympic Rings will be formed in the sky," said Wang, adding that Olympic symbols and elements will be a part of fireworks' designs with an aim to promote Olympic ideals.
Firing skills will feature compressive air launches, chamber pressure launches and computerized ignition technologies, employed for the first time in the display of fireworks, he told the media attending a press conference in Beijing.
To reflect the "Green Olympics" concept, some of the fireworks will use less smoking powder to minimize smoke and dust pollution, Wang said.
The designers intend to highlight the fireworks' effect both on the ceremony's stadium and larger areas around the facility so that the Olympic central zone will be an extension of the ceremony owing to the splendid fireworks.
Cai Guoqiang, a member of the core creative team in charge of visual & special effects of the opening and closing ceremonies for the Beijing Olympics and Paralympics, updated the press on the implementation of a comprehensive design and production project.
He said he joined the team in 2005 and it took him 2 to 3 years to do preparatory work. "Gunpowder is one of the inventions of China, but the fireworks this time are not only for the sake of pumping up the atmosphere, but also have a goal to achieve - playing the role of storyteller," he said.
Cai gave an example: Along the dragon-shaped landscape water system of the Olympic Green, the fireworks will be fired up into yellow and red peonies. The computer ignition system will control the fireworks, and within seconds, the fireworks will span 2 to 3 kilometers following the flag raising process.
During the climax of the art performances, the firing squad will display thousands of pictures of smiling faces collected from around the world, according to Cai's design. At that moment, fireworks will mimic 2008 smiling faces in the sky, said Cai.

Germany will join the cutthroat Olympic group B
The last game of the FIBA Olympic Qualifying Tournament for Men saw Germany take the last slot for the Beijing Games by defeating Puerto Rico 96-82, thanks to Dirk Nowitzki’s excellent performance and game-high 32 points.
The other two berths won in this tournament went to Greece and Croatia.
The International Basketball Federation (FIBA) announced the qualification schedule for the Beijing Olympic Games. Croatia will play in Group A, with Germany and Greece competing in Group B.
In group B, World ninth-ranked Germany will face tough competitors.
Spain, the winner of the most recent World Championship who also finished second among 16 teams at the 2007 EuroBasket Championship.
Greece is the 2005 European Champion and got second place at the World Championship in 2006.
The United States team is looking to Beijing for a chance to return to the "Dream Team" era of US international basketball dominance, and by all accounts Team USA’s preparation and attitude have both improved dramatically since the Athens Games.
Angola is the 2007 Africa Champion, and defeated China when they faced off in the Stankovic Cup in Hangzhou on July 19. This result no doubt worries host China, who would like to do well on their home court.
But advancing to the quarterfinals in the Olympics means getting in the top four of group B, which will be no easy task with this line-up of heavy-hitter teams.
